Nothing like a pandemic and hiding at home to get the blood pumping to start taking things apart, so I decided to restore the evaporator box and all the rest of the A/C parts under the hood of my 66. I think most of the pieces are original, but I know a few things have been replaced in the past, so some of these pieces that I have pictured might not be correct. I checked the JM (well not the latest edition) and the AIM, and found some things here via search, but I figured I could make a post of it so my questions/observations can be checked by all. I know this will be a lot, but I wanted to have it in one place instead of spread across multiple posts.
I hope the pictures stay ordered.
1. These are the 20 something screws that hold the box together and attach the blower fan to the box. 1/4" ATF x 3/8 recessed washer head screws with a C head mark. Appear to be dark phosphate, is that correct?
2. Five screws that attach the relay & resistor to the box and the tube nipple to the fan housing. 5/16" ATF x 1/2 recessed washer head screws with no head mark. Two are different than the other three, slightly different threads and appear natural instead of dark phosphate. What are the finishes of these screws suppose to be? Are they different between the relay, resistor (AIM C60 E1 shows both 9419320) and fan bracket (AIM C60 D5 - 9414586)?
3. Four screws that attach evaporator to box cover. 3/8" ATF x 5/8 recessed washer head screws with 3 dots in a triangle head mark. I think they are supposed to dark phosphate, is that right?
4. Two bolt that hold the STV to its bracket. 1/4-20 x 1/2 recessed washer head bolt with dimple and an E head mark. AIM C60 D5 shows 3785130. I think they are supposed to dark phosphate, is that right?
5. Two Keps nuts that attach STV bracket to the box. 1/4-20, appears finish is Cad or zinc
6&7. Okay these are the nuts that hold the box to the firewall and one that I really had a question for other A/C car owners. When I got the car I originally had mix of the wider collared nuts and a few of the speednuts, with the speednuts mainly being on the heater core cover or up top. I didn't think they were correct, so I bought some replacement collared nuts, but they had a smaller collar than the others. AIM C60 D4 shows that these should be 446069 speednuts, but the collared nuts look like they are original, especially the ones on the lower driver's side of the housing. The collared nuts are the same as those used on the rear valence 1/4-20 7/16" ATF 4728063. Some have a E mark, other nothing. The ones with the E appear they were Cad or zinc, those without appear dark phosphate or natural. Any else with a A/C car have these collared nuts or mix?
8. Three U nuts and screws that hold fan housing to the rest of the housing. 3/8" ATF x 3/4 short recessed washer head screws with 3 dots in a triangle head mark. Appear Cad. U nuts have a T mark and are green zinc chromate or something like that.
9. Four U nuts used to attach evaporator to box cover. Have a T mark on one side and 142 on the other, green zinc chromate finish.
10. Clamp that holds the evaporator tube going into the STV. Clamp has TINNERMAN mark on it and has a 1/4" ATF x 1/2 recessed washer head screw with a C head mark. Clamp appears to be gren zinc chromate and screw dark phosphate; are those correct?
11. Clamp that holds the expansion valve to the box. Clamp has no markings on it and has a 1/4" ATF x 1/2 recessed washer head screw with a Triangle head mark. Both clamp and screw appear Cad or zinc. I know the expansion valve was replaced before, so not sure if these are correct.
12. Clamp that holds the expansion valve J bulb to evaporator tube. Clamp has no markings on it and has a 5/16" ATF x 1/2 recessed washer head screw with a Triangle head mark. Clamp is painted green and screw appear Cad or zinc.
13. Tower clamp that holds on drain hose. Band is aluminum? embossed with WIT EK MFG, CHI U.S.A., PAT PEND, SG 20. AIM C60 D5 - 9414420
14&15. This is the resistor of the box. Plate is made of dark grey fiberglass that appears to be painted black on the outside. Has INDAK mark and number 3843168. Is this how it is supposed to be, painted? Or bare? When would it have gotten painted?
16. Metal nipple for tube going fan motor to fan housing, 3000091. Looks natural or almost galvanized. Also the terminal on the fan housing.
17. Bracket that hold STV to housing. Looks to be painted black, wanting to make sure that is correct (have seen some bare of paint). If black, is it the same glossiness at the rest of the housing?
18. A/C relay. I took the cover off to paint, can't remember exactly which way it goes back on. Is the DELCO REMY supposed to be upside down when its mounted?
19. The last is the little clamp that hold the expansion valve line to the housing. I was missing this so I had to buy it from a vendor. Is it supposed to be plastic? That is all the vendors sell. Also the screw to the left is the one that came with it, but does anyone know if it like one of the other ones that are used elsewhere (1/4" ATF x 3/8 or 1/2 recessed washer head screws with a C head mark)
