My 66 steering box is out for restoration/blueprint by Gary R. I've just ordered the new 1966 TIMJG 6th Edition. The previous TIMJG says the box can be either natural or painted black. Does anyone have the 6th edition TIMJG to see if that has changed? I want to get the correct finish. Thanks
PS Gary is providing great detail of the process.

I believe the vast majority of C2 steering boxes were painted black. A smaller number were natural. More natural finish steering boxes are found in original C3 Corvettes. So, which was yours originally? The only way to know that is to have the original steering box still in the car and un-molested or "restored". Barring that, I think you've got to go with the percentages.

Joe,
The 6th edition says the same thing as the 5th for the steering box. Either natural or painted is acceptable.

I believe that the wording in the new 6th Ed. should be something very similar to this: The steering box can be a natural finish casting with yellow, blue or green daubs of paint often found, or painted semi-gloss black, which will have the yellow, daubs UNDER the paint and are therefore not visible. The degree of coverage may vary. Judging Guidance: Steering boxes having inspection paint daubs applied over the black paint are not typical and are subject to an originality deduction.
For natural steering gear boxes, your wording is close. Instead of "yellow, blue or green", the new JG says "yellow and/or green". There is no mention of blue anywhere in the steering box section of the JG.
Do not put yellow paint dad on top of the black paint as this is incorrect. As I understand and I could be incorrect the yellow dad indicated a leaker and had to go back to repair. After the repair the box was paint black, so yellow paint on top of the black is incorrect and would warrant a deduction.
