The front springs are coated with a rust inhibitor and have a black appearance.

Any suggestions on how to achieve this black appearance?

looking at some pervious posts on this subject, it seems there is a question as to whether the black rust inhibitor is indeed correct looking at my 65 springs, I do not see any evidence of a coating.

I don't think it was black.

I think they were shot peened and then coated, but think more of a thin Cosmolene than a black coating.

            Per Chev. Engineering print:

Here is my 2 cents. Like the prior replies, I believe that they were natural cast steel. I would recommend that if you do leave them natural, put a protective oil on them to minimize rust such as Pre-Lube 6. No matter how well you store your car, corrosion is inevitable and you may have to repeat your efforts a couple times per year.
