    1966 427 power steering leak

Help; power steering pump leak i cant seem to find the source i replaced the 1 year old leaking rebuild pump with another newly rebuild unit. It is still leaking draining is a better description as all fluid runs out over night puddles in the under bracket etc. And ends up on garage floor. Its not coming from either hose i know that. The pump unit is so well buried under the altenator etc the leak has to be coming from the front of the unit. Any ideas as to where that might be. Its such a major chore to get it out i just replaced it too not have to go through it again. Im at a point where i rip out the power steering and replace with an unassisted system so i can actually drive the car.

    Jef,
The power steering pump on my 67 427 leaked, along with all the other P/S parts.
The return fitting on the back of the reservoir had been cracked and someone had tried to repair it.
I replaced the reservoir and resealed the pump, I then bench tested it before I reinstalled it.
Don't give up, you don't want to go to standard steering.
    Kind regards

How would I bench test. Wish I had done that before reinstalling.

If you buy a high quality rebuilt power steering pump, it should already have been bench tested.

New is always best. However, no new pump has been available from GM in many years. There are aftermarket new pumps, though, but I don't know of any with the original style reservoir. The ones I have seen have the "tear drop" style, 1975+ reservoir.

            Addendum:

Lares Corporation does manufacture a NEW power steering pump for your application with original style reservoir. As far as I know, this is a USA manufactured pump but I'd want to confirm that before I bought one. The Lares part number is 12032. Lares also offers rebuilt original pumps and is a major rebuilder of steering parts. If it turns out that the new pump is not USA manufactured, I'd go with one of their rebuilds. I'd first call Lares to find out the source of the new pumps.

I just replaced the Power Steering pump on my 1970 454. I decided to go with a new pump from ZIP, PN SKU: SC-886. It has the correct style tank. And yes they are a real pain to replace. No problems with the pump.

Note: I just saw Joe's post. The pump ZIP sells is a Lares pump. My documentation does not show country of manufacture. Their Tech number is 800-555-0638 web site www.larescorp.com

                Jef,
I made a bracket so I could clamp the pump to a work bench then made up a hose from the discharge to return, filled the pump and ran it with a electric drill. I then left it over night to check for leaks.
                Kind regards
