    tack cable noise.

Hey Guys, little help needed. have a 57 fuelie that the tack cable makes noise. I have replaced the gears in the generator that drive the tack. Also had the tack rebuilt and replaced the cable. coated the cable with muscle grease. still get cable noise. was told to back off the cable a little at the tack. Still get the noise. have tried moving the cable around which temporarily helps but doesn't solve the problem??? Any help would be appreciated. A strange situation??

    Three things you can check.

Look at the routing of the cable looking for sharp kinks.
Check the length of the old cable vs the new to see if they match.
Clean and relube the cable using a graphite based lube such as Kable Ease.

Did you install a new casing for the cable? Actually you should have bought a complete assembly. AC Delco found that the casing was bad 90%
of the time when the complaint was noise. It was caused by cable "whip".

You want a graphite based product not grease:

Ken, do you know of a reliable source to get a correct cable. I replaced the whole unit with one from CC and have the cable whip? probably was made in China? appreciate your help.

Actually, I would suspect the cable assembly from CC to be OK as they are pretty picky about their sources. GM used the part ST800 to lube cable assemblies. ST800 was a thin GREASE that is now discontinued. I would avoid graphite as it is too messy & quickly goes bad. I use a grease called Red Lightning that is available on eBay ( a little goes a long way).. Did your tach rebuilder use a new frame with a bronze bushing? Those old frames quickly wore out as they had no decent lubrication, and would sound like they were filled with sand.

I replaced my tach cable in the mid 80s with a unit from Dr. Rebuild. Still works.
