Re: AO Smith 1965 underbody reinforcements
Hello James,
Here are a couple of photos of the left and right front of my 1965 AO Smith core support as well as one of the supports rods. All seem to have been green with some red oxide primer, Nassau Blue and some black out. There was very little black-1965 Blue Black Coupe Core Support #5 003.jpg1965 Blue Black Coupe Core Support #5 005.jpg1965 Blue-Black Front End Bracket 003.jpgout on the front side of the support but about all was blacked out on the engine side except at the very bottom Also the AO Smith job was on the very bottom facing the ground when installed.- Top

Re: AO Smith 1965 underbody reinforcements
Thank you for the additional photos. Thank you for including the support rod, which my friend calls a "pencil brace". (I put that in in just case he searches this data base.).
Is that bolt from the same car?https://MichiganNCRS.org

Re: AO Smith 1965 underbody reinforcements
So after the car was painted, it was sent to blackout where the valance area and the front of the radiator support would have been blacked out with the hood in the closed position? I will assume the radiator fan shroud support bracket was installed at the time of black out? See attached picture of my car.
Just trying to determine how much black paint would be visible after blackout.

Re: AO Smith 1965 underbody reinforcements
Tom,
Attached is the 1979 Restorer article by Joe Clark. The picture shows AOS Corvette bodies being build and on page 25 shows the rear bulkhead support. Looks like the answer to the question is correct that they were at least in this picture, black in color.
Regards,
James
On the other hand, I have a hard time finding any green on this rear "bulk-head" support plate. It's just in front of a C2 fuel tank. Same car as above which is a 1965 A O Smith coupe. I should mention that a previous owner painted this area with something black, using a brush. (That happened more than 12 years ago.) I sanded and found no sign of green zinc chromate, but some red and/or red oxide over-spray up top. I think black paint (or nothing) was under the brushed on black goo. I just looked up from the bottom with a mirror, and the back-side is lightly rusted, not green. Might have to remove it to see all the back of it.
