Brace Plate for 1957 Master Cylinder?

    Hi all,

Here is a pic of my 1960 brake/clutch bracket/housing. The end that attaches to the master cylinder has the square plate as seen in the photo between the master cylinder and the housing. Both my '57s were disassembled when I got them, so I don't know if this plate is missing or wasn't used. I don't see it in the AIM, but just want to be sure.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Bob, my, 57 VIN # 3745, restored from 1999 to 2002 (frame up) had a plate on the back side of the master cylinder. In Noland Adams book, 53 to 62 there is an indication of a spacer, part #3706215, it goes between the rear of the master cylinder and the firewall. The diagram shows the spacer is inside the firewall on the engine side.

      Bob,

Look closer at the AIM Master Cylinder Section 5 sheet 2.

Bob, looking closely at your photograph, the bolts are facing the opposite direction. The head of the bolts with washers, as indicated in Noland's book, goes thru the engine side of the master cylinder. There was a vapor barrier compound (goat snot) applied on the backside of the master cylinder. How about photos of your progress. I assume you are performing a ground up restoration, as all of your other resto's. 57'S FOREVER.

Hard to see it but the spacer is shown as a dotted line.

Ed, Bob's picture is of a '60 he had for reference. Post 1957 had studs built into the pedal bracket and used lock-washers/nuts to hold the MC.

Did the 1957 pedal bracket have threaded holes or were nuts used on the inside of the bracket at the 3 bolts for the MC? The AIM doesn't show nuts for those 3 bolts.

so since the spacer is a doted line .Would it go on the passenger compartment side not firewall side ???

Dan, Inside. In fact, it cannot go outside in the engine bay as the triangular area of the firewall would prevent it. This is the same scenario for the 58-62 cars.

I found a photo of the inside of a 57. You can see the bottom edge of the plate between the pedal bracket and the firewall. You can also see the weld nuts on the bracket for the 3 bolts to hold the master cylinder, so that answered my question.
