Rear differential odd dimensions
Found a rear differential in a 1969 Corvette race car with casting number 3878476-N and stamped ID of AN 5565. One odd thing about it is the distance between bearing carrier mounts on this unit is 7.520 versus several others I've measured of 7.865. Does anyone know if this was a one year only items or just what this unit is? never saw one like it.

I believe you are referring to the dimensions between the diff inside side walls where the case bearings are? If so there were two housing castings used from 63-79, well 3 if you count the 63 Gran Sports.
The 63-66 were the narrow housings, the 67-79 were wider. You can distinguish them by looking at the side walls, if they are straight then it is a 63-66, if there is a notch in the casting for thicker shims it is a 67-79.

Here is a close up of a 67-79 showing the notch. This is one I rebuilt so the shims are steel not the solid cast ones originally used- that snap many times.
