1966 Gray Glass to Black Glass Transition

Little surprised I did not find this searching Black Glass or fiber glass but where do we have noted the time when the bodies went to black glass? Was it really late 1966 like June? AO Smith versus St Louis?

      Hi Tony,
all the glass? or certain parts still gray? Like BB Hood, back end deck, end panels fender quarters?

I haven't finished stripping the body paint yet, but from what I can see, black glass.

I think you will find over lap on glass color late 66 and early 67. Do not be surprised if you find a panel different from the rest. GM used up stock and didn’t rotate it.

My March 4th 1966 build convertible has a mix of light gray, dark gray and black fiberglass panels.

I bet those mix of black and gray panels would leave the exterior judges scratching their heads when they check the body panels.

The rear deck is black and so is the firewall, left quarter panel and right inner fender. The left inner fender is light gray and the rest of the panels dark gray. All are factory original installed panels also the bonding strips are mixed in color. Car has been stored since 1979 and family owned since 1972 last state inspection 1979, now under going complete restoration. Heck the only panels the judges would ever see is the rear deck and floor since the rest get blacked out or covered with paint or interior parts. I don't know what color the hardtop fiberglass is since I don't want to touch the hardtop too last. Hey but I got all born with driveline!!!!!!

My 1966 convertible that I describe in my previous posts with the variable color fiberglass panels is a AO smith body.

Mine is an AOS body with a 15 April build date. The body cab is black glass too. Still haven't finished stripping the fenders yet.
