I am posting this to help others that may be having the sameproblem.
I restored a 55 several years ago to original; in the process I had the correct power glide rebuilt. For some reason the park position never worked right on an incline, it tended to slip without complete engaging. After 5k miles I decided to get a new park pawl and have it fixed. When the mechanic got it apart he found the pawl was rounded off some but it appearedthe planetary gear may be damaged too.($$$$$) He later called back to say the new pawl and the old one did not completely mesh into the planetary gear and he had to ground the pawl to get it to fit. Once he did this it would fit into the gear and hold. (saved me some $$$). The replacement pawl was an NOS piece so was done that way originally.
So, if you have an early p/g and it will not hold in park you may have the same problem. You have to install the pawl and watch it engage the planetary gear snugly in order keep it from slipping.
