    1964 Chassis Blackout Re-Visited

I purchased a 33K mile 64 Coupe last year that is basically untouched except for radiator hoses, belts and tires. I am in the process of gently cleaning the chassis in preparation for the Scottsdale regional and then on to Vegas. This car has never been judged. I am finding some very neat original factory markings in the process. Looking at the frame and half shafts it is very obvious that this late December build car had a lot of chassis blackout sprayed on it. I removed the spare tire carrier for the first time for better access to the rear of the car for cleaning and check out the drippy mess that is on the rear section of the frame and actually dripped onto the top of the spare tire carrier. There is no doubt in my mind that these 63-64's were sprayed excessively. I have many more cool pics of original frame stenciling, Drive shaft inspection marks, body mount masking tape etc.. if anyone wants to see them. Car is L76 Riverside Red (original), with red/white interior (original). All original drive train.

Hi Jace. Thanks for your post. Would you email as many photos as you'd like to me of your chassis blackout? I'm interested to see. Thanks. Tony. astein1066@msn.com

Looks great, thanks for posting. I would like to see a picture of your frame pull date marking, near the stencil. I will have a '64 in Scottsdale too, see you there.

Hope you will display the car before restoration, so original parts can be noted (may get some interesting feedback)
I'm specially interested in the rear end and suspension. Half shafts & associated parts, rear of bake plates, brake drums, and so on!

          Hi Alan,

I will not restore this car. It is an exceptional survivor. All I intend to do is to clean it up and go for as many Bowtie stars I can get in addition to flight judging.

          Thanks,
          Jace

Other than making sure the casting date is legible I would not be cleaning things if you intend to submit the car for Bowtie sign off.

You can clean it. Just be very careful.

A couple more pics showing the right half shaft. I have just started to gently clean the rear suspension. I will post more pics as I get them

You probably are, but be cautious. That frame paint can seemingly be removed by anything.

Patrick is right about being carful as the asphalt paint was not very durable and could possibly be washed off with something a little stronger than Dawn. That was the reason for the change to Dupont 640 black primer in March of 1968. Even though they purchased the latter at that time, they were exhausting the asphalt coating while intermitting with the newer Dupont 640. By the end of 1969 production and all of 1970 thru 1975, all was used was Dupont 640 black primer. 1976 was a totally a different finish and a conversation for another thread.

                            Jace,
Thank you for posting your images! I would also be interested in any additional pictures you may have. You can email me at: midyearfactory@icloud.com Much appreciated.

As others have mentioned, the black-out coating is very easily disturbed with any kind of solvents or gasoline.

                            Thanks, Marco

Thanks, that looks just like it should be. I am always looking for when they switched over to hand writing the frame pull date on the frame.
