It depends on how early it actually is. The early 1965 Muncie transmission used extension housing GM casting #3846429. This was used to ABOUT February, 1965. After that time extension housing GM casting #3857584 was used. These are CASTING numbers which appear on the extension housings. The GM PART number for the extension housing was different but, for all practical purposes useless, since those numbers appear nowhere on the part. They might be useful if one was looking at an NOS part in a box with a legible GM parts label.
One clue to inferring which extension housing was used on your car if it was built near the changeover time: the 3846429 has the speedometer gear provisions on the LEFT (driver) side. The 3857584 has the speedometer gear provisions on the RIGHT side. So, assuming the car has its original speedometer cable, you can infer which extension housing the car was originally equipped with by the location of the cable and which side of the housing it could be attached to.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
