    Gymkana Suspension

Is there a quick or simple way to tell if a 78 has Gymkana suspension? Was is standard with any engine/trans combo ie L82 4 spd? Thanks

Standard rear spring is 9 leaf (2-1/2" wide). FE7 is 6 leaf (2-1/4" wide) per JRM page 108.

I do not believe FE7 was standard with any package. Ordering pages in 1978 GM Heritage pdf show no standard or option restrictions with FE7.

If your question pertains to your 1978. That information (and other RPOs) would be on your tank sticker. RPO information on your SPECIFIC car is also available from GM Archives as your car’s “shipper” document. (1977 and up)

Chris, if your car hasn't been in much weather look at the bottom of the front cross member near the radiator and you may see an FE 7 crayon marking. My '78 still has it and my '77 did. Ordered both new. '77 is L-82 TH400 and '78 is B2Z L-48 TH350 with trailering package (FE 7 with HD radiator). Steve

          Only FE7 ('75-up) has a rear anti-roll bar, 7/16", and the front bar is HUGE, 1 1/4".

How do I go about getting the shipper doc? Don't really want to drop the tank.

Shipper document is available from GM Media Archives. Link below.

I obtained mine years ago when they were gratis. Has all RPO, ordering dealer, build date, etc. My tank sticker was faded and VERY fragile. Parts turned to dust (area glued) when removed. Before attempting to remove tank sticker, I documented with LOTS of high resolution/close-up pictures. Shipper helped to fill in some faded build sheet items.

GM Heritage Archive is GM's global repository of historical photography, motion picture film, video, digital media, and vehicle documentation.
