Wheel weights on original 1967 Rally Wheels

I am restoring original Rally wheels on a 1967 Corvette. The inside surfaces are rusty, so I was going to have them grit blasted and painted black on the inside and argent silver on the outside. Should I just paint over the existing balancing weights attached to rims, or remove them? Do the weights need to be replaced after painting?

David, If you are putting new tires or reinstalling your old tires. The assembly needs to be balanced again.

Wheel weights were not painted, and judges will not want to see paint on them. They should be removed and as Scott says, after the tire is remounted the weights will likely have to be put in some other location. And don't be surprised if you need different weights to get the assembly to balance again.

The weights should come off, if they are original "Micro" ounce weights, keep them to put back on when the wheel is balanced after painting and tire mounting.

Could you just file a little lead off the bottom of the weight if needed for adjustment?

Hi John,

A practice performed when necessary by aftermarket service stations, was to simply "nip" off a small piece of a larger sized weight. This was not done at the factory.
