1971 Corvette 454 Air Conditioning Compressor Rebuild?

    Hi All,

In the process of putting back together an original 71 454. The car in question has an entirely original AC system that was removed from the car about 15 years ago. Before I go through the effort to restore all the parts correctly and re-install in the car, I am wondering if there is a reputable vendor who could check/ rebuild the compressor and associated parts. The last thing I want is to re-install everything only to find out I have major issues and then need to remove / clean and re-restore what was done. Obviously I would like to restore/ rebuild as many of the original parts as possible.

Those who have restored cars with AC what process did you use? Any good vendors to recommend? Changing to Vintage AC is not an option.

    Best,
    Dave

Agree with Jeff. DOM is the best there is for the A6 compressor.

What other parts do you want/need to be rebuilt?? POA and drier are two that can be rebuilt. Do you need these?? Others??

      Let me know.

        Thanks Jeff and Larry.

I will reach out to Dom.

I would like all parts or as many as possible to be checked and tested before install.

        Best,
        Dave

          Dave:

Which ones????????? Dom doeA6 compressor work, but I do not think he will do any other rebuild/restoration, although you can ask him.

There are places that do some of the other work........but you need to tell me what other things you want rebuilt so I (or others) can advise.

            Hi Larry,

Likely want to test the drier, evaporator, condenser and valve. But also open to suggestions as to what is really needed in terms of testing and rebuilds before the system goes back together.

Spoke with Dom earlier and he will likely do the compressor. Thanks for the referral!

            Best,
            Dave

Have your drier rebuilt by Classic Auto Air if it is an original. You can also buy a new one from DELCO that is almost the same as the one you have. Part # 15-1240. Also PaceCarJeff sells rebuilt driers on Ebay. Do not reuse the old one.

You can and should pressure test the evaporator and condenser at home using shop air. Make some adapters to hook-up a pressure hose. Test condenser at 150 psig and evaporator at 75 psig. Immerse in water and check for bubbles at these pressures. Classic Auto Air can also do this for you for $$$ if you want...........but chance of damage in transit is possible.

I can provide a test procedure for the TXV expansion valve or you can send to CAA for a checkout. Again, I would test at home.
