Bumper backround color on 58=62

I just saw a beautiful restored 58 Corvette. Even the hose clamps seem period correct. However the front bumper coves or what is suppose to appear as air scoops were painted the same color as the car. Most all C1 Corvettes I have seen are blacked out. The tail pipes also had the pipe sticking out about one half inch. Is that how they are suppose to be or were some 58-60 Corvettes exhaust pipes even with the exhaust out let ?

My 59 that I have owned since 1970 34k miles then 59k now never repainted the coves are black and the tips are even with the bumpers.

Behind-bumper surfaces that are body-color are a dead giveaway that the car has been repainted, and that through ignorance or personal preference, that area was not painted black.

Any idea how this would of been done on an assembly line. Were these areas masked and sprayed black ? Isn't the upper part a part of the body which would of been painted the cars color already?

It's part of "blackout" when they did the underside of the hood, inner fenders, radiator area, etc. Probably not masked because the paint had not been rubbed out yet.
