    Top Fight

For all you Top Fighters out there, can you please tell me what is the correct backing for a 1966 Corvette convertible carpet. I'm hearing so many different answers it's driving me nuts. Can someone with the experience tell me what would be correct for judging purposes. Thank you

    Morris,
The carpet backing is not judged. Additionally, there is no current carpet on the market that duplicates the original double twist loop woven 80/20 rayon/nylon carpeting of 1966.

In the C3s we judge carpet backing, so...

Having said that, current reproductions have a clear backing, whereas original floor carpet had an opaque backing and bulkhead carpet had a black backing. No one makes those, only the clear, so unless you find original carpet the backing will not be correct.

You do need to be aware of the carpet cutouts and flaps around and under the seats.

I just had my 66 coupe judged at a Chapter meet and at the regional in Altoona.

Regardless of whether you use Al Knoch or ACC carpet you will likely loose points for the weave. You could also lose points for the binding in a couple of areas. It really depends on the judge.

There was no mention of underlayment.

I used the jute backed kit that Knoch sells. My understanding is it is a reasonably reproduction of the original.
