    fan clutch rebuilder?

Looking for a recommendation for a business to rebuild a 1966 fan clutch. NCRS standards expected and hope someone can steer me to a place where the turnaround time is reasonable and can be returned as expected and returned in a timely manner. Thanks in advance for any information or experience, good or bad, that you wish to share.

Both are very good rebuilders/restorers as well. Fred did my 1967 fan clutch about 15-20 years ago, and it is still going strong. But I heard he sort of disappeared from the scene. Vinney also has a good reputation for this work.

However, my first choice is the recommendation I made earlier.

I had a 1960 fan clutch rebuilt by one of the well known rebuilders. It produced a grinding noise after I installed it. I had to send it back at my expense. The rebuilder fixed the grinding noise and picked up the return postage. A month later, the fan clutch started leaking out of the center; I returned it at my expense and was charged for the cost of new oil after the rebuild (2nd rebuild), but return postage was paid by rebuilder. Two months later, the clutch is leaking out of the center again. I haven't decided what to do. I am tired of paying shipping to this rebuilder. The rebuilder told me in January that maybe he added too much oil and the fan clutch was adjusting to the excess oil. The adjustment period means that I have to clean oil off of the fan blades, the 3rd member, and the underside of the hood. Whomever you choose, ask them who pays shipping charges if there is a problem and it has to be returned. Ask them if there is any charge associated with the rebuild; should it be necessary. Maybe I just have a fan clutch that cannot be rebuilt.

Remember, these clutches were not designed to be rebuilt.

Totally agree. I put them in the same category as 67 fuel pumps. When they are expended they are only a hands on conversation piece. I do not see how one would risk the hood radiator and anything else on a "reseamed" unit. Oil leaks alone is bad enough. I could understand just for sitting on the show field and not run. But to actually drive with it......... no way!

I had a fan clutch rebuilt by Fred Oliva some years ago. It looked great but it took a couple of months to get it back. Once installed it worked fine for a couple of years and then started leaking now its sitting on my work bench where I think I'll leave it. I received a 2 point deduct at the Nationals last year for having a service replacement not that big a deal. Somethings are not meant to last forever.

Couldn't agree more with Gene. I have GM part number 3916141 on my 67. It's discontinued from GM but still available in the aftermarket. It is very close in appearance to my original fan clutch and has been trouble free.

                        Re: fan clutch rebuilder?

Thanks to all. After considering the options and the advice given by all of you is seems logical that keeping my original clutch for NCRS judging use only (it has only a small "seep" around the seal) and using a Hayden #2711 for the rest of the time will work OK. Again, thanks to all of you who posted or sent a PM concerning the good and bad aspects of having a fan clutch rebuilt.
