    66 rear sway bar mounts

I've experienced difficulty with the rear sway bar link or mounting bracket. Both sides have gotten bent or mangled. Where does this extreme stress come from under normal driving conditions. I've put less than 30 miles on the car since body drop and they have gotten bent.

Something must be seriously wrong with the installation. These brackets and links should not distort in normal street service or, even, track operation.

      Hi Jef,
I think someone has the links installed improperly. When I got my car I had the same problem. My car is apart but I will look and see if I have a photo.
      Kind regards

One thing I would carefully look at is whether the correct bar-to-frame brackets and bushings were used and installed correctly. While the 65-67 end links and associated brackets are the same as 68+, the bar-to-frame brackets and bushings are NOT the same. The original 65-67 brackets were GM #3742246 and the bushings were GM #3742254.

Could it be that I had the bolts too tight? The installation looks the same as all the pics I can find in the various threads I've looked at. I do see that I have the rear brake caliper lines routed incorrectly.

Make sure your sway bar isn't upside down. I have seen that a few times.

The excessive tightness of the bolts would have nothing to do with this problem.

probably just pure happenstance, but i just almost had the same issue. i realized when i had the rear jacked up the sway bar and links dropped down when the suspension drooped. when i dropped it back to the ground, the links stayed down and jammed themselves vertical to the ground. kind of hard to describe, i have never had this happen before either.

anyway, might want to check your links while on the ground to the picture above, the bar should actually ride above the links and the arms of the bar are almost horizontal to the ground.

My newly installed links looked just like Jef's. They were installed with the wheels off the ground. With the wheels off the ground the links can easily be connected to the sway bar while they are pointed back instead of up. The second time around I mounted the links pointing up with the wheels on the ground. Everything worked great that way.
