I checked my engine numbers the other day and started to do some research on the codes from the engine stamp pad. The stamp pad codes are: S154425 FII27RB

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
RB was used in 1962 for full size Chev with manual transmission. The S154425 does not look like a Corvette VIN derivative.- Top

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
David, casting number and date may give more clues. As Joe stated, only Corvettes had the partial VIN on the deck in 62. Does the first number, by chance, match your VIN? Please get back to us. Given enough information, the guys on this board can provide amazing amounts of information. Chip.- Top

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
Thanks everyone for responding with your thoughts. Is there a code located close to the starter? And another one cased on the intake manifold in front of the distributor? The case block number down close to the bell housing is 3782870, which I thought meant it was a corvette 327 ci block. Maybe it means it's just a GM 327ci block???
Possible scenario: The engine was originally built as a RE 327ci 340HP corvette engine and it wasn't needed so they rebuilt it to be a 300HP and had to change the stamp to RB before sending to the Chevy passenger assembly line. ????
Is the differences inside the engine (e.g. cam, crank, etc.) between the 300HP, & 340HP?

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
Sharing the last 5 digits of your vin ( you can X out the last one if you prefer) would help us a lot. 3782870 was the casting number for Chevrolet 327's from 1962 through 1965 model years. There were millions of them made.- Top

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
The 3782870 is a casting number which was used for 327 engines in 62, 63, 64, and 65. These engines were used in all Chevrolet vehicles. On the rear of the engine just to the passengers side of the distributor there is a date cast into the block. With a little effort you should be able to see that date. I seriously doubt an engine headed for a Corvette was stamped with an RB, a Corvette 300 HP engine is stamped RD.
There are a lot of internal differences between a 300 HP and 340 HP engine. Solid lifters, different pistons, cam, intake manifold, harmonic balancer, oil pan, timing chain cover, water pump, pullies, valve covers.- Top

Re: 62 engine stamp pad mystery code
David,
Too bad it wasn't what it was represented to be.
I think that any speculation about it being your original correct motor with some kind of funky stamp repair has been put to rest.
Just enjoy the car--62's are superb!- Top
