    Early 68 rear end stamp

I am working n an all original early 68. I'm 90% sure the rear end has never been out of the car. It looks like the date may have been re stamped , could this be possible on an early car?

Mike original rear end stamps where done very sloppy. The numbers where spaced and angled inconsistently on many. The flanges with numbers in your picture seem kinda banged up. Could you show all of the flange numbers and what ratio is in it now? I have many units to compare. Most likely no one messed with that stamp , especially if the car sat a long time.

It could very well be an original stamping. As Mark mentions, original stampings often have offset characters and appear to have been stamped with individual stamping dies. Otherwise, the area of your carrier housing pictured appears to have suffered from extreme corrosion pitting. Is the rest of the case like this? If, indeed, the rest of the carrier housing suffers from this kind of pitting, I'd want to replace it. Also, I'd want to carefully inspect the frame for corrosion damage.
