Mike Hanson has covered this topic of chassis black out on the '63 and '64 model chassis. There seems to be a empty room in NCRS as to the putting to print of the actual practice on these early mid years chassis black out procedure. Mike has described the events back in the '63-'64 years of production and the way it appeared even on this web site.

Yes he did, and he is correct, but cars are still being judged as TFP whether the exhaust and other rear end assembly parts are blacked out or not..

I'd paint the mufflers and rear pipes black because it looks better.

Now, to the practical side - neither will affect your score at all. Why? Because exhaust systems are judged under the Standard Deduction system. So, use an aluminized system and lose 25% of the originality points even if you paint it pink. Once the standard deduction is used, all the other details of the system mean nothing.

In reality this is why both painted and unpainted systems are garnering the same points.

The standard deduction for Aluminized exhaust is 25% Stainless Steel is the 50% deduction.
              Fixed it.

My 63 made it through Nationals twice without exhaust deducts or any blackout paint on anything whatsoever...that's probably (well, maybe, certainly) not the way it came off of the line, but, life is too short to worry about some process from 54 years ago that was totally dependent on operator attitude and how many beers he had at lunch...
