    1963 Outer Heater Box

    Hello everyone,

I see that I need to replace the Outer Heater Box, that which is seen on the firewall in the engine compartment, on my 63 Coupe that has a 300hp engine with no Air Conditioning and has a June 21st build date. Can anyone help me with what to look for in the way of numbers? Does it have a Casting Number or a Part Number? Also what color is it suppose to be?

    Thanks for the help,
    Kenneth

Kenneth, there may be a part number in the AIM but it will probably be on the inside so that is of no help. The box you seek is black with definite white strands of fiberglass throughout the molding. Unless yours is completely destroyed I would seek out someone that might repair the original.

      Kenneth,

I stripped, cleaned, derusted, made some fiberglass repairs and cleared mine. Turned out great. I also bought a new seal kit from Drrebuild. There are pictures and comments about doing it in the newsletter below.

A car built on June 21st 1963 would typically have the late style box. Meaning the one with the louver mecanism that looks like the 64 to 67 style. It's a much better design than the first style with the bar and spring.

While mine is a '64 IIRC the maunfacturing date and part number were ink stamped in white inside the the box. But that might have been the inside heater box? Have to check

Both are stamped, one in white ink and one in yellow ink. I just looked at my pictures and one interior box had both a yellow and white stamp.

There is a stamp in the metal portion of the inside box.

An engine side box should be easy to find if that is all you need.

            Cheers

                Edward,

Here's a picture of the P/N number (3156854) and letters that are on the inside of the box and it does have the reinforcements you show in your picture.

                Thanks, Kenneth
