I have trouble keeping the generator pulley tight on my 1960 270 hp. The fan assembly then starts clanging on the generator end plate. After tightening the pulley, I also noticed that the belt alignment is not perfect, and the fan assembly is still making some contact on the end plate. I would really appreciate your advice on how to tackle this issue.

Are you sure the generator is fitted with the correct fan and pulley?
Do you have the 3768152 generator bracket reversed? Refer to page 291 in Noland Adams 53-62 restoration book, Vol. 1.
The bracket length is 7.10" inches long (1.17" + 4.55" + 1.38"). The two mounting holes are not centered.
Is it a tach drive 1102043 generator? The pulley should be 3 5/8" diameter with a aoffset space between it and the fan, apx 1/4". The shaft nut should have a lockwasher behind it. I typically use a impact wrench to tighten, or a strap wrench and a long breaker bar and socket.
Before the pulley is installed, ensure the special collar is installed on the shaft. This sets the backside of the pulley in proper position. You may be missing that if the fan is hittting the end frame.
Collar shown in center of this photo and installed on shaft in 2nd photo.
As Joe and Dave mentioned, check for proper parts. The attached document may help solve your alignment issues. Also attached is a generator rebuild process I use which has more details about proper parts, brackets and pulleys.
Rich,
I will disassemble again and inspect/identify all parts. I believe that I do NOT have the special collar to provide the proper spacing for the fan. Your attachments and articles will serve me very well! Thanks so much for your advice and information!!

With all the different combinations and permutations that are possible when mixing available parts, I found it easiest to make a new generator mounting bracket from flat steel and drill holes where needed to provide the proper alignment when all was assembled.

Steve, Thanks and glad it helped.....Yes you definitely need that collar. If you can't locate one easily send me a PM with your addr and if I can find one lying around here I'll drop it in a padded envelope for you tomorrow. Heading out for some errands in the late morning and I can hit the PO on the way.
