C2 BB passenger side inner splash shield

    All,
Were there design changes to the passenger side inner splash shield for a C2 BB?

The picture below shows what I thought to be an original inner splash shield for a C2 BB. However, it will not bolt to my 67 because the 'slotted' hole for the floor attachment bolt appears to be misplaced. I used a small block splash shield to mark (shown in black) the correct location for the 'slotted' hole.

Does anyone know the application for this part in the shown configuration?

    Thanks
    Daniel

The right side underbody splash shield was different for big blocks and small blocks for 1965 and 1966. For some or all of 1967, the big block shield was apparently used for both big block and small block.

Thanks Joe, but did the location of the 'slotted' mounting hole change during the 3 years of C2 BB production?

        Daniel,
The difference between SB and BB shields is the relieve cut to clear the exhaust pipe on 396/427 engines. The mounting points on the frame and body tab are at the same place for SB and BB cars. Per LI Corvette listing, the RH 396/427 shield is the same for all 3 years. The shield you have pictured is an oddball configuration that I have never seen so far. My only guess would be that it was used in an early 65 396 installation, again, just a guess.....

          Dan,
I am pretty certain that your "oddball" splash shield is from a 1968 car

Excellent point, Bill! Since I don't play with Sharks, I'm glad I learned something new.

              Bill------

Could be. The right side 1968 shield, GM #3922440, was also SERVICE for all 1964-67 Corvettes.

Makes sense. Although the one shown is actually from a 68, I think. The service ones, at least the ones I have seen, have both sets of mounting slots for the inner bracket so as to fit either model.

Yes, the 3922440 may have been a SERVICE-only piece. I can't find any indication that it was used in PRODUCTION. However, I could not rule out that it was used in PRODUCTION as a substitute for the scheduled piece.

Re: C2 BB passenger side inner splash shield

                    Joe,
From what I know, that RH shield in Daniels photo was an early 68 only part used in production. The LH side being of the same version used on 63-7 cars but with the inner mounting hole in a different location. Beginning with approx vin #9939, another set of shields was introduced and were the long, rectangular ones that reached all the way back to the trans crossmember and mounted there via two small brackets. These new ones held in place the fiberglass batts used as floor insulation and continued thru 69 AFAIK.

There was a TSB issued on Dec 17th, 1968 recommending the removal of the first shields and replacing them with the newer version.

This second version was described in a TSB issued on April 22, 1968, with the same recommendation.

With those TSB's I am sure many of the early shields were removed and the later ones, with the batting will be found on early cars.

There was mention of it in the 68-9 judging manual at one time, dont know if it still is.

So Daniels part could be of much interest to early 68 owners.

So it looks like it is an early 68 production part.

Thanks to all for the discussion and clarification to the parts application.

                      Thanks again
