Many posts have appeared over the years regarding power steering control valve leaks. As I've said before, I believe that the most common cause of these leaks is due to failure of a certain gasket. That gasket is pictured below [not for sale]. This is a metal compression-type gasket and it's a ONE-USE-ONLY gasket. If it's re-used, a leak is likely to result. To make matters worse, it's long-since GM discontinued and is not included in any aftermarket control valve kit that I know of. In fact, I do not know of a source for it although there may exist one.

I don't suppose that was common to any other setup since the vette assist was unique to the GM line- I think anyway. You think there are any sitting on some shelf in the back of a parts dept~! Probably not with inventory reduction on a 34+ year old small application part.- Top

Gary------
The gasket was used on some other GM applications which used the same type control valve as Corvette. Most, if not all, of these were pre-1965.
Any still around in GM parts departments? There could possibly be a few here-and-there. I would not expect too many.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Power Steering Control Valve Gasket
Hi Joe , I just rebuilt my valve and it leaked, so I bit the bullet and sent it off to lonestar caliper. My question here is what does lonestar use for their rebuilds if this is a one use gasket and it's not available ? I have rebuilt ,successfully, my calipers and carburetor so I think you are right about your assessment that this gasket is the culprit . Jeff- Top

I wonder about this myself. I also wonder what is used for the NEW control valves available on the market. If anyone finds out, please let us all know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
