    GM Shipping Data Report

I just discovered that the NCRS Data Report shows the official production date for my 1965 coupe (S101551) as 11/7/64 (Saturday). I have also read that the St. Louis labor strike was not over until 11/6/64 (Friday). Isn't the production date the same as the day it came off line or in other words, the build date? Certainly they did not run the line on Saturday, the first day back after a major strike. What am I missing here?

What is your basis for saying certainly they didn't? I'm not saying they did, but wondering about why you say that with such certainty.

If they started back on second shift, 12:00.01 am was Saturday.

Thanks Harry. You have raised a possibility that I had not considered.

Thanks Mike. Working in a UAW plant for 35 years and knowing they would have to solicit every worker in the plant to work OT on Saturday after a five week strike and I suspect the resulting absenteeism would be very high, makes me assume a Saturday start up would be unlikely. I have also learned never to say never and was hoping some of the original players would fill in the unknown facts. If this car was built on Saturday, that explains a lot about the tribulations of the restoration!

The shipping data report has my car as being built 4/19/1963. I have the Regular Commercial and Truck (carbon 5) document that says the cars was built 4/20/1963. The plant had a daily plan as to what was to be built that day. But, some of the dates were typed on forms as the car went down the line. In my case the car was scheduled for 4/19/1963 but when it hit the spot on the line where the Regular Commercial and Truck document was created and the date typed in, the line worker looked at the clock and calendar and it was past midnight, thus 4/20/1963. It took a long time to determine why there was a difference. Hearing John Hinckley's presentation on the St Louis line configuration help with the answer.

Doug -- a little more data: November 6th 1964 (a Friday) trim tags [D6] were the first post-strike ones. Supposedly, VIN 1426, was the first car off the line, post-strike. The trim tag shown below is from convertible #01497, with S505 body. My old 1487 was also D6. Don't have NCRS shipping report for that car, but I do for my '65 #23564 (the last '65 produced), which says Friday July 30th. Chevrolet Central Office end-of-month VINs "built" at each plant for all Chev production lines, and letter sent to all zone service managers, shows (& accepted by NCRS tech manual) two cars were built (or maybe completed is a better word) in the month of August. This would have had to be on Monday Aug 2nd, unless they worked Sunday the 1st. Guess we'd need more info on what exactly the NCRS "official production date" means.

My good friend Harry Hood in Indiana purchased last summer 65 silver / silver coupe vin number #1455 from Kent Washington. TRIM TAG is B25, (Sept. 25) and Body # S273. ENGINE # 5101455 F0907HN. So it sounds like coupes were ''different'' production days? I have tag photos if needed. Lots of mystery 50 years later. This car needs restoration.......I think Harry might sell it.
