I'm restoring a 54 soft top frame and I've run into an area in question. I've checked the archives and archived restorer articles. I've also looked at several online photos of the rear bow but can't find the answer to my question.
Both rear latches were attached with machine screws that went through the rear bow and attached to nuts. This seemed strange because the nuts could be seen through the soft top fabric. I suspect the machine screws were originally secured to threads inside the rear bow that were fastened via T- nuts or in some other ridged manner. Does anyone know for sure? I've attached a photo of the latch I'm referring to and a photo of the rear bow (from the outside view) which shows the holes drilled through the bow, allowing the machine screws to accept nuts or something similar. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
