    C-2 Windshield Clips

Does anyone have a few detailed pictures of the windshield and trim clips all installed and in position ? (Roadster)

I have all but one of my original clips , and a whole new set of the repros which are different, so pictures of either would be fine. Pictures of both even better .

Also is there a good "how to" article on windshield install , just like so many of the other articles produced here and sooooo helpful ?

The service manual has pretty detailed instructions and photos. The roadster is easier than the coupe, you don't say which you have. The aftermarket weatherstrip seems a bit fatter than the original one so it will cause the molding to tilt and not hit the clip at the correct angle. I like to put either the upper or lower molding on first, then slide the windshield in. Also mark where the clips are on the body so when you are installing the molding you know where to apply pressure.
It might be worth it to find an experienced glass person to help because there is a bit of a learning curve on installing the windshield. Actually the windshield is easy, the moldings are difficult.

I don't now how good the reproduction clips are these days but the clips I got from LIC about 10 years ago were terrible. My installer ended up using the old clips as the new ones didn't grab the molding.

This page has some nice examples (scroll down to the picture gallery), and yes the repro clips can be troublesome -- use originals where possible. ALTHOUGH I recently heard that Paragon is now making nice repros...

          Jim,

I have the same job (coupe) in a few months. I see that Paragon has two different part numbers. One says it is US made, the other must the imported. The US ones are about twice as much as the imports

I'm hoping the US made ones are OK. Unfortunately I messed up some of mine getting the windshield out.

            Don,

The Paragon clips that are US made are the only ones that will work properly. The imports will let the trim pop up or won't catch at all. I've been there and done that so take this advise and buy the Paragon US made clips for both Conv. and Coupe.

              Thanks, that's what I assumed.

                Don and Joe Ray,

Below are the clips I took off when I removed the windshield . I repainted them , but as you can see from the pictures some are in pretty poor shape . I don' t know if they can be re-bent , or if it is worth it . I can at least use some of them, perhaps on the ends , or where ever it is the hardest place to get a good connection . Any thoughts on that ? IE, What areas are more difficult , and mixing and matching in general . I don't even know if they are the originals , as the windshield I took out was a replacement .

I looked at the new clips I purchased and they are from Paragon. By comparing the part numbers, it turns out I do have the good ones , so I've got that going for me at least.

                Frank,

Thanks for that link ! I always do a better job with pictures !

Now is a good time to inspect the windshield sill underneath the glass for any pin holes
where water may leak through. Last time I did this, I had a substantial water
leak dripping inside onto the carpet and a pin hole in the windshield sill was the
                  culprit.

My repro clips didn't fit either and I had to reuse the originals. That's why I always save the
                  original parts if possible.

                    Stewart ,

Thanks for the help and suggestions . A pro for the windshield sounds good .

I really like the idea of installing the lower molding first, since it seems to be everybody's bane , and one of the easiest ways to ruin a new paint
job ! I have read a lot of other posts where vert guys seem to have more than 11 holes and clips installed , and I am one of them. So I am assuming that mine was a PITA from day one . I will use the new Made in the USA Paragon clips and a few of the best looking originals to fill in the additional holes I have .

My only other question is what if any caulk , weather stripping , glazing compound , etcetera , is applied before installing the lower molding ? Or do you just install it clean and fill in the gap/spaces after windshield installation ?

                    Thanks
                    Jim

Personally I don't use caulk because it makes such a mess and I never drive the cars in the rain plus they will leak even with the caulk. (And I live in Seattle, that eliminates a lot of days) Judges will look for a bit if you plan on having the car judged.
If you want to caulk it use the bedding caulk, not urethane, and it goes in the channel before windshield sets in if your doing the molding first
                        Good luck with it.
