1965 Wing Windows (PV Prep) --Gene Mano

Preparing my 65 convertible for PV. At present my drivers side wing window is right at the limit for play when half open. In preparation for Denver I took them apart to rechorme the original frames and put new gears in. During one of the tech sessions in Denver Gene Mano mentioned you could make other adjustments to get the slop out.

Gene or anyone else have any suggestions.

    John:

Earlier this fall I had the wind wing cranks in my 67 rebuilt with new gears. The new gears eliminated all the slop and play---so that is perfect. However, the new gears that I got will actually allow the crank to rotate 360 degrees--- (i.e. no stop)

This results in the wind wing being able to press up against the door panel....see the photo --- this is a PV fail - or so I am told.

The original gears did not rotate a full 360 degrees and stopped just short of the window frame touching the door panel when properly installed.

Just something else to consider ---- Hope this helps....

    Regards
    Bill

      John,
When you remove the peened steel plate from the crank gear housing it needs to be modified. The peened hole should be elongated to allow the gears to be meshed closer together. Reduce the gear center distance. Putting the gears tighter in mesh cuts down on the backlash thus smooth, no slop vent window action. You will need to fill the void area to keep the steel plate in it's new position. I assume you thread the aluminum housing and use screws and washers to secure steel plate.

Understand you are making this assembly better function with no slop than it ever was when brand new. This will meet the NCRS requirements but will far exceed any original vent window operation made by GM.
I guess it's overly functional restoration.

You must have used America's Garbage gears. I tried them and they ended up in the trash. I've rebuilt several using original type gears and "massaging" the cover to get the correct action as the originals had.

My 64 'repro' window gears got a bit sloppy, I bought an NOS one, installed it, tested it several times and it got sloppy too. The peened over retainer studs had already gotten loose. I drilled them out, one at a time, and tapped and installed 1/4-20 bolts, BIG improvement Even NOS ones will need tweeking. Good Luck!

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Thank you Gene. Not looking forward to disassembling with fresh paint, but were we go. I also have a little chatter on the drivers side window to work out.

                Bill,

I had heard the same thing from Jim Lucia. He gave me a tip about removing the black plate to drop the panel down a bit. I'm working with original panels and its got a crease from it rubbing for years, but I'll see what I can do and let you know. It's on stands in the garage now... Just reworked my e-brake system to hold on a hill and stall in second gear.
