Original 69 wiper door area photos

In all of my photos, I do not have a picture of an original unrestored wiper area that has finishes that are easy to see for a 1969. I would love to see a picture, as I am contemplating freshening mine up. (Yes, it is currently apart for cleaning.) Is there anything that is not flat black or asphalt black covered besides the plastic grommets? (Jim or Gary?) A 70-72 area might work as I know they are similar (Paul or Ron?). Asking for the sun, stars and moon if anyone has a BLACK 69 car that has not been restored. I am not sure if the lack of black out affected anything in the wiper area on a black car as it did in the other areas like the vents. Thoughts on this are very appreciated!! (and I am counting on Alan to have the photos I need.) And I apologize in advance for my crazy question!!

    Hi Shannon,
I posted some pictures but realize after Paul's post that they may not apply to cars with black exterior paint so I'll delete them.
I don't want to mislead anyone.
I'll send a message to Bill and ask him to delete them from his 'quote' too.
    Sorry!
    Regards,
    Alan

I'm curious what you're going to do about the white nylon bushings on the door mechanism… paint or no?

      Fantastic pics!!

Rich Haydinger has a 6,000 mile Monaco Orange 69. Mike Moxley has a 6,600 mile Black 69 with one repaint. I don't believe the wiper recess was painted, though.

There is a beautiful low mile 69 black L88 coupe residing in NY.

Perhaps they'll be of help to you in some way.
I think they do show how thin the blackout was in some places and that body color did show through.
Also notice the strip of body color on the area of left side nylon stop that appears to indicate how the blackout 'mask' was placed. Compare it to the right side.
          This is a 46k car.

Awesome pictures Alan as always The level of detail here is truly special. What I have done to better replicate the factory is have a little lacquer put in a spray can to go back and add color before re-doing the black out if that helps anyone. Typically the black is much nicer when we do our own cars than what was typical of factory black out.

One has to remember that black cars had a slight difference on the black out process. Since the car is already black some areas would not need an additional black out done. Hence the blackout in those area would have exterior black paint instead of blackout.

It was one of the five we judged at MCACN 2015. It is hard to get details of engine compartment black-out on black cars. Red cars, like Alan's 1971, lend themselves to good contrast for those kinds of pictures. Yellow or white would work well also.

Back on topic: The kind of pictures Shannon is looking for can only be had when the wiper door is off the car. Most of us do not have that opportunity. Those who have that chance generally have a lot of it.

Alan, I beg you to repost the photos for educational purposes!!! I did not get a chance to see them except on my phone while at a swap meet. There are so many cars that have been restored and that education is gone. Your photos are a piece of that priceless information that should be shared! Rarely does a C3 owner have a black car and once again I love being in that minority. Please consider re-posting. To answer your question. My bushings will stay white (aged yellow) as they have no paint on them now. Once again, I am torn on just cleaning versus refinishing. If you are really bored, I would love to see your wiper compartment in an after picture. Thank you very much for your response!!!!!

I do not have pictures. I would recommend you clean it good and leave it alone. It's only original once. My experience is the area was left pretty bare fiberglass and then was covered in tar to stop the water leaks. It did not get much blackout (other than around the windshield frame) because with the wiper door on, it did not get seen. I had the silver 69 wiper door off to fix the fresh air door vacuum canister. But, did not take any pictures. I was just tickled to find the vacuum leak and put stuff back together. Let me see if I can get some of the car tomorrow. Or his other 69.
