Remanufactured Tach Drive Distributor from Autozone
Re: Remanufactured Tach Drive Distributor from Autozone
Mark, The problem is a lot of different Corvette engines and a lot of different parts installed on the reman. dist. assy.'s Each vacuum advance is different, and mechanical advance is a different calibration. how would you know what you'll get. and to top it off quality of the rebuild and it parts. My advice is to look for a correct numbered used dist. assy. and have it rebuilt there are a few people that have the machines to properly calibrate them to your engine and set up the vacuum advance and mechanical advance according to your engine's vacuum and its horse power.

Yeah $336 is a pricey experiment. I had my original rebuilt by Lars for about $150 and its like new. I've heard rumors he's not doing them anymore which I hope is not true - he's a master at it...

i have used them on my truck with success so maybe if you transfer all the old weights springs etc. would be ok, are they cardone? they used to make tach drive dist many years ago that held up but as stated weights, springs etc. probably generic which most would not even notice. good luck whichever route you end up taking.

Yes, remanufactured by Cardone- for what that's worth.
Regarding finding a "correct numbered" distributor, about the only numbers to look for are the band and the VAC, each of which is easily swapped.
This has become moot- when putting the part into the "shopping cart" to check out, the site says it's unavailable with no estimate for future availability. Too bad, I got excited since AZ had a 20% off on-line discount code... not a bad deal for just the parts.

Of course we all know there is more to even the mechanical advance than weights and springs. The "football" or cam is important as well. One can order replacement shafts for standard low hp engines or specific for SHP engines. I did just that when I rebuilt mine a number of months back figuring I needed a replacement shaft as well as a matching cross shaft. My original shaft was scratched and scored, but I opted to stay with my original as the damage was above the lower bearing surface. The repro pieces did not look well made including the profile of the "football" compared to my original SHP. My cross shaft was boring a hole into the housing so I opted to drill and tap the housing for a set screw to keep the cross shaft in place, and I reused my original cross shaft to maintain the matched gear set.
The replacement distributor still sounds like a good option to have as a back up in case you have a break down of your original or have to send it out for repair or rebuild.

Cardone (and other big companies) offer a rebuilding service of your original part. They no longer have cores to sell whole distributors outright. Another problem is you won't have any input as to how it gets set up. Since Lars is not doing them anymore, I did the mechanical rebuild myself and used a dial back timing light to set up with excellent results. Dan
