Eric------
Yes, the side cover bolts were natural steel without any form of plating. However, the extension housing-to-main case bolts were black phosphate finished. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66 muncie bolt finish
Joe, My original post I was going off memory (shouldn't do that), so I check my data base I keep on Muncie casting, bolt marking, tag numbers, VS P-numbers (started this late 1980's)...
My 1966 Muncie data shows:
Front cover---------no marks or M -------------------natural finish
Side cover----------SBC-------------------------------natural finish
Top tail--------------SBC------------------------------natural finish
Long bottom tail-----L5-------------------------------Black finish
Short bottom tail----G--------------------------------natural
All of the info in my data comes from "virgin" Muncie 4-speeds that I have acquired, or restored for original owners, or restoration shop in the north eastern IL. ,,, south eastern WI. area...
I have over 125 Muncie good cores in stock, plus 100's of main cases, tails, side covers, internals, and original bolts...
I also have N.O.S. GM main cases, tails, side covers, inputs, clusters, speed gears, sycros etc... Plus an N.O.S. 1969 M-21 complete trans...
Hope this helps... Crash- Top
