Help! I'm in the process of reassembling a 67 coupe . I just got the engine back from the machine shop and was about to put the balancer on the block, when I notice the balancer I got with the car is 6 3/4 wide, which is too big as the timing tab won't allow installation of the balancer. I researched the archives and all the literature I have and see there was an 8 in. and a 6 1/2 inch balancer in 67, as I have a 300 hp I think need a 6 1/2 balancer . I have been searching for a balancer and the replacements I come up with are either 6 or 6 1/4 inch balancers ,will the difference in circumference make a difference or do I need to find a used original part. Also the new J G says there should not be a retaining bolt on the crank ,my crank is forged and has the bolt and washer.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for looking. Jeff

Jeff------
The balancer you require was GM #3896903 but it's long-since GM-discontinued. This balancer is 6-1/8" OD and 3/4" thick (at the outer ring).
This is a quite common balancer and was used on many other Chevrolet small block applications. However, I wouldn't go looking for a used example. You can get a new replacement as manufactured by Dayco under their part number PB1012N.
Many 327's for 1967 used the crank snout bolt. Be extremely thankful that yours has one whether it's original, or not. Installing a balancer without one is a bitch. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 327 300hp harmonic balancer
I hate to bother you but I just looked up harmonic balancers on 2 different web sites and one lists a dayco pb1012n for 62.79 the other lists a power bond pb1012n for 42.41 . Do you know if these are both the same unit under different manufaturers ? Both sites list it as a replacement 6 in. balancer for a 67. Thanks again Jeff.
Jeff-------
They could very well be exactly the same piece. I doubt that Dayco manufactures this balancer. PowerBond could be the actual manufacturing source. However, I really can't say for sure.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks again Joe. I just looked up dayco pb1012n harmonic balancers for sale and what came up was a dayco oem pb1012n by power bond so I guess they are both the same. Thanks for your input I do appreciate it. Jeff by the by advanced auto seems to have the best price at 42.41.- Top

One thing to be prepared for: most likely this balancer is going to be manufactured in China. A very large number of automotive parts, particularly castings and parts for older applications, are now sourced from China. In the case of this balancer it's both a casting and a part for a decidedly older application. In many cases, China has become the exclusive source for these sort of parts. Just because it's sourced from China does not necessarily make it bad. You will find that many of the parts of BRAND NEW cars, including Corvettes, are also sourced from China and other foreign countries.
When you do get it, please let us know if it is, indeed, sourced from China or other foreign country. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
