    A.I.R. filter removal?

Good morning to all. Yesterday I drove home after a fun filled day at Carlisle with a couple of things. I picked up an A.I.R. pump for next to nothing because it didn't work. I am trying to disassemble it to see how it all works but I cannot remove the filter, the finned device on the front of the pump. Does anyone know how the filter is removed and subsequently replaced?

BTW, it was very interesting to watch them "make" an American flag from the various red, white, and blue Corvettes. Look for the photo on Corvettes at Carlisle home page. Oh, and the new Corvette is even nicer up close than seeing them on TV.

From my experience working on my 1968 the filter slides on the shaft and the secured pulley in front keeps it on the shaft. The original type filter/fan is unlike in appearance from a rebuilt unit that is available from most auto parts stores. Perhaps spraying some rust penentrant or lubricant may break it loose from the shaft.
Gary just inspected my original removed pump. The filter/fan slides over a whole lot of very small splines machined on the circumference
of the shaft where the filter/fan mounts. It is a slide on/off fitting.

      Jim,
I read the Chevrolet Service Manual (a reprint, of course) and it is of very little help. It says to use pliers to remove the filter. The Carlisle donor pump wasn't in very good shape (thus, the really cheap price) so perhaps the plastic filter is seized onto the metal surface. I have some PB Blaster on it and will let it do its thing. Thank you.

Another forum had some photos but merely showed the before and after photos with not much dialogue.

Bill Hodel my be able to help you. He usually advertises in the restorer and is an NCRS member. There are also some you tube videos that show how to take the pumps apart to remove the fins to make them nonfunctional. Hope this helps.

I should have stated that years ago, I did buy a complete AIR setup from Bill -everything from A-Z. So I do know his skills and prices.

I remove the fan with the metal center using the three threaded holes and a puller I made.

Thank you. After experimenting with an inoperative donor pump, I decided to leave the filter alone.
