Re: What is the connecting piece of a gas cap called?
JR,
When you put a gas cap onto a C1/C2/C3 fill pipe, there is a piece on the underside of the gas cap that has two ears on it that go into the fill pipe. The fill pipe has two slots in it that the ears in the piece on the underside of the gas cap go past. Once the cap is seated, you turn the cap and the ears turn away from the slots in the top of the fill pipe and then the cap stays on until you reverse the process.
So, does anyone know what the piece with ears on it on the underside of a gas cap is called??
Re: What is the connecting piece of a gas cap called?
I am not sure it would have a proper name or component designation as I believe it to be part of the gas cap and not / never was available separately. Chip.
Re: What is the connecting piece of a gas cap called?
Jim,
Sorry for the joke reply. I got to thinking about your question and began to search (Google) different terms, if you search for "gas cap ears" - then select image view you will get a lot of pics of the back side of traditional (vintage) gas caps with the two protrusions that fit into the cut outs in the gas filler tube flange and tighten when the cap is twisted. I've attached a (random) pick of a cap showing the "ears".
Also, I found the text from the 1968-1982 Corvette Restoration Guide by Richard Prince. On page 70 he talks about gas caps and mentions "ears" that secure the cap to the tank neck.
So..... it appears that the commonly accepted term or word for what you are describing is (are) "ears".
