    Lacquer Paint Vendors

I bought a '65 Coupe several years ago and worked on it to get it to NCRS standards. It is a 2 time Top Flight car now. I had stripped it and painted it with lacquer paint I bought from an outfit in CA. Looks pretty nice but it is not the correct color. The car is a Goldwood Yellow and it is yellow but it has too much green in it. I need to repaint it (I do a bit of classic car restoration work so I will do myself.) I would ask if some of you folks know of a source for good lacquer paint from someone that can mix it correctly. I know it is hard to get. I 'cheaped' out on the stuff from CA and so now I get to repaint the car and I do not want to do that again. Thanks for any guidance.

PPG was still making lacquer a few years ago.

          Hi Mike,
This was the source for the acrylic laquer paint on my 71 and I believe for the paint on Keith's dad's 67 too.
My car was painted about 10 years ago and Keith's dad's much more recently.
          Good Luck!
          Regards,
          Alan

Yes Alan that's where it came from. But I am not sure they will ship paint.

Anytime a paint supplier mixes paint, there is a good chance is is going to vary from the original for a number of reasons. What you need to do is take a sample of the color you want to the supplier and have them custom mix a color to match. Often you can find some original color under the sill trim or behind the door panel. if that doesn't work, next step would be to find someone that has a yellow car that is the correct color and borrow a headlamp bezel for the supplier to match the paint to. A good supplier will be able to do a spray out on a test panel for your approval, or at the very least mix you a small quantity so you can do a test panel and make sure it matches before you buy 2 gallons and find out it doesn't match.

At Bloomington Gold this year there was a Goldwood Yellow '65 Fuelie on display in the Gold Year section. The color and paint looked spot on from my recollection of what the color should look like. I talked to the owner and he said he got zero deductions for paint at last year's Nationals.

I thought it was lacquer and I really surprised when he said it was single stage urethane with a flattener added. I'm usually pretty good at picking out lacquer from newer types of paint, but this one had me fooled. Unfortunately I don't know the gentleman's name, perhaps someone else might know.

Your lucky though, a non-polychromatic color should be maybe a tad easier to match.

Try your local PPG dealer. Duracryl Lacquer is readily available in GA.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any sources in the northwest, preferably a short drive from the Canadian boarder?

Wesco Auto Body supply has stores all over the NW including Bellingham. They carry PPG.

You might want to visit with Marty Fowler a long time Corvette restorer/Judge/informed person, also a PPG paint dealer. He is in Kennett Mo-- 573-344-0934 or 573-888-2401. Regards/Joel Miller
