Look at the ignition switch fiasco. If the ignition shuts off you can still steer and brake. It just takes more steering wheel and pedal effort. That one is going to cost GM tens of millions.

Same with the jammed throttle deal on Toyotas. Couldn't you just turn the key one notch CCW to shut off the ignition or put the gear selector in neutral. The driver of the Lexus in San Diego that ended up crashing at 130 MPH and was a national news story was a CHP officer!
I think the US Attorney General fined Toyota 1.2 BILLION for the unintended acceleration issue. I suspect if the investigation reveals that GM intentionally tried to sweep the ignition switch issue under the rug and hide it for 10 years before the recall last year, the fine will be at least as large and probably even more. Twelve people have died because of the switch problem.

I agree, something not right here. To many options to get out to save your life! I too was stranded in my 09 due to a radar detector being plugged in to the cigerrete lighter. Once in the car it would not start and the door "buttons"would not work. Car was a month old and my wife and I were on a trip to Arizona. In about 2 seconds my wife looked at me with terror in her eyes and said "get me out of this (fill in the blanking) car". Yes that is a direct quote. I calmly reached over her and pulled up on the manual handle on her side. She promptly jumped out with great relief. There is also a door release handle in the rear compartment directly behind the driver. All of these handles are clearly marked in red. I agree also that any top can be opened from inside the car. Just my 2 cents.
