The judging manual reads "The rear spring is light grey, semi-gloss color" can anyone please give me an actual color name or better still a paint code for the correct color?

Try to find a rattle can of "Zinc Rich Coating" to paint your spring leaves prior to assembly. This a pretty close match to the original paint used by the factory. I would not describe the color as semi-gloss. It is pretty much a flat grey. I bought mine at a big box hardware store in the aerosol paint aisle.

As far as shade, here's a comparison of the grey on the springs alongside the grey on the shock absorbers; both off my early '65 and never restored. I would say the spring coating used, called "Ionoclad" (sp ?), is several shades lighter than the shocks. IMO, not sure of the semi-gloss description. I'd say just a tad more gloss than flat sheen.
I use Rustoleum Navy Gray. After a sandblasting and Dupli-Color gray primer, I brush the Navy Gray on one side, then a few days drying time and do the other side. It takes forever to dry but it's very durable.

I would not describe it as semi-gloss, either. In fact, the Ionoclad was decidedly flat. I would say no gloss, at all.
