In my experience, the tail housings are a much lower quality, both in terms of material used, i.e. more of a pot metal and darker, and lower quality of casting. They didn't need to be as strong and high quality as the main case and mid-plate, etc. I've never gotten the tail housings to look as nice, but IMHO that's how they were originally too.

The Muncie main cases and extension housings were different types of castings. The main case was an aluminum sand casting. The extension housings were an aluminum die casting. Sand cast aluminum evidences a different surface texture and coloration compared to aluminum die castings. So, the main case and extension housing always appeared of a different texture and coloration, even when they were brand new.

I have an NOS 1969 M-21 never installed, and the tail housing is darker than the main case...

          Hope this helps... Eric

I just had my M20 restored by Davids 4 Speeds. He has a large tumbler which did an awsome job on the casings.
