Gary, one other thing I thought of, how is your coolant level? Reason I ask such an odd question is about a year ago I was chasing a lifter noise (coincidentally in the #2 cylinder) in my 2004 Silverado V6 (low mileage) and was very upset at the thought of dealing with a major repair on a newer vehicle. If I changed the oil, the problem would go away for a very short time and then come back again. I noticed the coolant level dropped just a bit each time. It turned out there was a leak in the intake gasket (common for those motors) and the lifter was getting filled up with coolant and oil. Fixed the coolant leak and the engine noise went away. All the while the engine ran smooth but with an annoying tick. Easy enough to check. Sorry, I should have known you would have listened with a scope.
Thanks Dan, I did look at that as well. I recently had the valve cover off and looked in at the lifter, the inside of this engine is clean, no droplets, brownish oil, dipstick is clean, the coolant level is good. I usually change the oil when bringing the car out in the Spring. I'll see if it makes a difference then.
