Need Help... Speedometer
Hi, i'm a french lucky owner of a 58 vette. Ihave a problem with my speedometer. The miles turn well when i'm driving but the needle of the speed indicator don't turn... I don't think the problem is the cable because the miles work. Do i need to remouve the full system from my dash board? If yes can u send me pictures and clear explications to do it. Thank's a lot. Best regards. Michel

Re: Need Help... Speedometer
I agree. If the odometer is working but the speedometer is not, there's no way it can be a cable problem. You need to remove the speedometer instrument and have it repaired by a specialist.
There ought to be such specialists in France. This type of speedometer is not unique to US-built cars.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Need Help... Speedometer
Michel,
The problem you are having is common to earlier 58-62 Speedometers. The shaft on the speed cup is soldiered to the cup. It becomes loose and the pointer (needle) will not register the speed.
It will have to be removed to be repaired. Any speedometer shop in France can accomplish this task.
Enjoy your 58 and do you ever travel down to the Nederlands to join in the fun with our Dutch friends?

Re: Need Help... Speedometer
Welcome Michel,
A fellow Corvette enthusiast up in New York that I know wrote a procedure for cluster removal. See attached below. Once the cluster is out removal of the speedo head is easy.

p.s. everybody is correct, the internals of your speedometer have a problem. As said, it could be a broken shaft to cup joint, or a worn mainshaft gear. Regardless, it's time for a pro to repair it, and most importantly after repair to calibrate it for a correct reading. This way you won't get any speeding tickets running around Paris.
Also, I recommend you but a hard-copy of the ST-12 Repair manual.....but for now, a online version can be found here.....

Re: Need Help... Speedometer
Michel,
I worked for Philips for 25 years and CGR in Paris before that. I have retired and live in the states. I have had the opportunity to be in the Nederlands many times and have enjoyed every minute of my travels in Europe.
Would like to attend a meet in the Nederlands some day.
