    1963-1964 Hood

I have two 1963-1964 hoods which I'm trying to research correctly and need some help. Both hoods have 4 hood wedges so its my understanding they are after VIN 6500 based on what've I've been able to find out so far. However, the one hood has a small rivet and the other they larger rivet. If someone could help with approximately what VIN was the small and large rivets? Thanks in advance for the help, I appreciate it.

Joe,I am a bit confused on the year of your car.....in your message you state 63-64, I assume you mean when it was made, since the 63 and 64 hoods are radically different because of the cookie sheets and fasteners on the 63 versus drain hole on 64's, the hoods pictured looked like modified 64 hoods where someone has added wedges.....I do not believe 64 had wedges ever...I definitely could be wrong on this....my original hood, Oct 63 built 64 vert does not have wedges and looks identical to your hood from the inside, I cant see the rivets well in the pictures nor do I see the drain hole, but I don't see any 63 typical surround features......they both look like modified 64 hoods to me. Joe, I am not sure if anyone really knows about the rivets, as 63 had so many changes with the hood blocks. maybe a few can post with the vin numbers and note if they had a small or large rivets. Might give some what of a clue.I would say just go by the JM as that is really all the judges are looking for ( none,2,4), rivit heads might be a tough call.

Here's a shot of a couple of 63 hood I have. The hood on top has 2 origonal spacers and came from a 17,000 range car. The other 2 holes are filled in with factory filler, The one beneath has 4 and came from a late 10,000 car/ [IMG][/IMG]

I am working on a 68xx car, no blocks but has big rivets, and the holes for 4 block that are not drilled through, blocked. I know the JM has something about holes being blocked., and my 63 106xx has 4 holes and big rivet heads.

Photo of factory blocked holes from late serial number hood. They can be opened up, if necessary, for the threads are there. [IMG][/IMG]

Early 64 Oct build has larger rivets type. Hoods are two piece some early 64 cars should had might have late 63 type hood bottoms, GM didn't through away parts.

No evidence of any 63 parts on my hood...hood surround inner, fiberglass outer, no wedges, no extra holes...vin 38XX 1964

THis may be the first time we discussed this. I have seen two different size rivet heads on hoods with wedges/blocks. Wish I could tell you what my 9900 car has but it's buried at the moment.
Jorjorian asked me the size of the rivets of my March 63 long ago.
Maybe he will chirp in and help although it appears Lombardi already knows the info. I for one do not. JD

I hope these additional pictures of both hoods are able to clear things up on the rivet size. The one hood has been undercoated back in the day so its hard seeing some of the detail in the pictures. The undercoated hood was in storage for over 20+ years until last week.

Joe.....you need to clarify are you trying to figure out what a 1963 or 1964 hood looks like, because every picture you have shared is of a 1964 hood.....that as Rick has pointed out has been bastardized......it don't matter the rivet size...if your trying to mount a 64 hood on a 63......if you are trying to figure out a correct 64 hood, please state that and what your VIN is....either way the hoods you have both look like they have been messed with for a 64, and totally wrong for a 63
