    '73 l48 clb egr

A few listings on ebay suggest that an L48 with 4spd may have had a 7035172 NX (normally for an L48 w/ automatic) rather than the normal 7040318 EGR. Is there any truth to this?

Not according to GM. The original valve for 1973 L-48 with automatic trans was GM #7035172. That valve was discontinued in September, 1976 and replaced by GM #17051810. The latter was discontinued recently but you still might find some around.

The original valve for 1973 L-48 with 4 speed was GM #7040318. That valve was discontinued in September, 1985 and replaced by GM #17051819. The latter was discontinued without supercession only a few months later.

Thanx Joe. What I'm hearing is that different EGR part numbers were used for cars with California Emissions. The suffix code stamped on the block is CLB, indicating this is a CA emissions L48 w/ 4spd.

Different EGR valves were sometimes used for California versus non-California applications. However, this did not occur for 1973. 1974 was the first year that different valves were used for some California versus non-California applications.

So, why were there different engine suffix codes used for 1973 California versus non-California applications? Well, there were almost certainly other emission system differences although, offhand, I could not tell you what they were.

Hopefully yours is in nice shape! If you need an N.O.S. one they are a tough find. It took me 19 years to find a N.O.S. #7047066 for '73 454's. I almost built a lighted trophy case for it! I did find an N.O.S. '73 L-48 one, which is on the car now as a 'filler' until I restore the car. That was about 18 years ago though! Good luck!

Well Rich, if you ever find that 7047066, I know someone that will gladly pay for that 7040318.

It looks like 7035172 NX are fairly easy to find.
