Does anyone know if or who can restore my original 1969 auto shifter plate? I can't seem to find a really nice original. Aftermarket is not correct. Any clue? Thanks, Jeff

Re: 1969 shifter plate Anyone restore these?
Hi Jeff,
Mikes suggestion is a good one.
With a little practice of just how long to wait after spraying, and at what angle to hold the blade, the results can be very good.
I really like using the old formula Krylon #1613 for 2 reasons; it gets very good coverage with a very thin coat like the original paint, and, once it 'flashes' it's ready to start with the blade. If you've waited the right amount of time, (just a couple of minutes), the paint comes off in long threads and leaves a beautiful sharp edge with no paint build up.
Worth a try?

I did mine myself following the above. If your lettering is good you have tape over the letters and trim the tape with an exacto knife; paint multi-coats, let it dry and then peel off the tape. Or do a multi step process to paint the lettering silver while taping the black- Top

If the chrome is badly pitted I don't think even a rechrome is going to make it right. To do that, the substrate zinc diecast will have to be restored. The cost of this, assuming you can find anyone to do it, will be substantial. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
