    hood release assembly

I have a 64 coupe. Does anyone know how to adjust the hood latches so they open and close evenly and together? Thank you ,Ron

Ron, two things to adjust for better operation. First, make sure your small cable end locking devises are up tight to their stops or levers eliminating any play. Second loosen the base locking ring on the hood pins, adjust the pin in or out so they're not binding and have a little room to press the hood down a little when closed. Make sure the release cable is faily easy to pull. Put some white lithium grease on the hood pin and female hood latch.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Dan , Thanks for the reply. Is there a set height to set the rubber bumpers? Also how do you loosen the locking ring on the hood pins? What do you do first the bumpers or the pins? Thanks Ron

The pin lock rings are a lock nut, take a screw driver and hammer and gently tap them counter clockwise to loosen, etc. Then adjust the stopper to be just low enough to allow some down force to move the hood, you don't want to have the hood in a tight bind with the stoppers. Remove all slack between cable stops and levers, that way you'll get equal opening force. Don't get them too tight or the hood will pop open on one side. Smear on some grease or door ease wax and test. Finish last beer from six pac.

Thanks again Dan. Hood seems to be working fine after following your instructions. I've got another question. Do you know how to adjust the parking brake? It won't hold at all on an incline. Thanks Ron

The procedure for adjusting the parking brake is well-covered in the Chevrolet Service Manual. You should have one if you intend to do any work, at all, on the car.

However, understand that when the parking brake is adjusted according to the service manual you may still find that the brake will be marginal, at best, when the car is parked on an incline. This is especially true for 65-82 Corvettes equipped with disc brakes but is also true to a lesser degree with 63-64.

It is pretty easy. Just follow the steps in the service manual. These manuals (for older Corvettes) really don't cost all that much. Every car should have one.

The manuals for C4 and later Corvettes are a different story. They cost PLENTY. However, if one is going to work on the car, one needs to have them.

                  Ron -

It's not particularly difficult, but there's a specific sequence required, which is covered in the step-by-step procedure in the Chassis Service Manual.

You really should have the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual and the 1964 Corvette Shop Manual Supplement; both are available from the NCRS on-line store ("NCRS SHOP" in the blue bar at the top of the page). Get the Assembly Instruction Manual too.
