Need help;Couple of questions on my 68 Corvette?

Still getting my 68 ready for the Chapter Meet in August. Here are a couple of questions for our C3 Experts:

    1) What is the proper position for the side view mirror? I asking for the position for the mirror itself relative to the stem (holder).
Kinda hard to explain but what I'm after is where should the maximum of the mirror be in position with the stem. In the sales
brochure it shows it both ways. I would guess that the mirror should have the maximum area of the mirror above the stem because
it has a superior vision angle and the codes are in the "reading" position. Comments Please.

2)On the shift lever rubber boot. When I bought the car(A long time ago) the boot was a double fold instead of a single fold shown in the
Judging Manual. My car is a very "late" car made in June. When I got judged at B/G the interior Judge said he would not deduct any
points because being the car is so late in production it could have came with it. When we "redid" my car there was no indication that
the transmission/shifter was ever out of the car. Maybe Joe Lucia/John Hinckley/Terry M. could comment on this.

    Ok; thanks again; Larry

    Larry,
Position the mirror at zero or 180 degrees it does not matter it is adjustable for the driver to suit his/her requirements. As for the boot how late is the car. Sometimes the following year parts do make it into the previous year build since it does not affect function.

K17 is a ways before the end of 1968 production. M09 is the last day of body build, so you are a little less than two mounths fromt he end.

Have you looked in the AIM to see if there is a late change of part number for the rubber boot?

No one is going to care how you have the side view mirror adjusted.

          Larry------

There may have been as many as FOUR boots used during 1968. The first was GM #3919730. The second was GM #3931579. The third was GM #3934994. The fourth and last was GM #3940690. I don't know anything about the 3919730 or 3931579.

The third iteration, GM #3934994, was a "single fold" boot. This was used from sometime after the start of 1968 production until sometime about mid-production or maybe a bit later. I don't know just when. The fourth, GM #3940590, was used afterwards and through 1969 production. This was the "two fold" boot. So, I expect that your car was originally built with the "two fold" boot.

The 3934994 was discontinued from SERVICE in February, 1969 and replaced by the 3940690.

The 3940690 was discontinued in July, 1970 and replaced by the GM #3976537. I believe the 3976537 is an early version of the 1970 leather boot. The 3976537 was discontinued in March, 1971 and replaced by the GM #3977797 which is the 1970+ style leather boot.

My July 18 built 68 has the double fold boot. I believe it is the original for the car.
