1970 VIN exceeds monthly final production number.

    Hi there,

The final monthly VIN listed in the 70-72 TIM & JG for March 1970 is 407977.
My 1970 trim tag is dated C31 with a VIN number of 408051. This is 74 cars after the final monthly VIN. (less than 1 day of production). Can anyone please explain what may have happened and at what stage during production was the VIN derived?
The corvette order copy is dated 03-03-70, The shipping data report is 04-01-70 and vehicle pre-delivery inspection dated 04-06-70.
This is a tripple crown low mileage original car.

    Thanks and regards
    Shane

Easy - your body was built on March 31, but the car wasn't finished until April 1st. So, it is not counted in March production numbers.
The Trim Tag reflects the body build date - not the car production date.

      Hi Patrick,

Thank you, I did not know that. I always thought the date on the trim tag was the vehicle build date. Anyway, now I appreciate why the shipping report is significant.

      Regards
      Shane

The time built code on the trim will be the date your car arrived at the station on the assembly line where the tag was attached. The body had been assembled and painted by that time and partial assembly may have begun. Most cars were not completed on the same day as the time built date and usually needed another working day or day and a half to be completed.

We may have contributed to this misunderstanding by our casual use of the term "build date." We often refer to the date on the trim tag as the "build date." It is more accurate to refer to it as the "body build date."

BTW Shane. I judged your car several times years ago. You have a very nice car. Congratulations.

            Thank you Michael and Terry.

Terry, you remembered the VIN number? Wow, you are so correct, I have the judging notes for this car, several with your name attached.
Unfortunately I dont know much about its history, can you please PM me if you were familiar with judging this car in the 90s.

I have notes in my computer (survived a bad virus and three different computers) about the owner of the car in the '90s. I remember visiting his home to look at the car before he got the courage to bring it to NCRS & Bloomington Gold. Jeff was a MoPar enthusiast, and we had to convince him we were not as bad as he had heard. We judged it at the Illinois NCRS meet. I don't think I was on the Bloomington team that judged it, but I could be wrong about that.

I know there is a triple crown in horse racing but did not realize there existed a triple crown in either NCRS or the Corvette hobby?
